Beacon City Council Minutes

Tuesday, March 7, 2017

 7:00 p.m.

Call to Order- Mayor Jim Hughes called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Council Members Cecil Smith, Dwight Teeter, Ron Kauffman, and Darrell Rust were present. City Council member Richard Thomas was absent.

General Business 

Review Minutes from February 7th and February 28th Meeting

Treasurer’s Report-

Claims Report-

Motion to approve the consent agenda made by Darrell Rust, seconded by Ron Kauffman. Motion approved.

Old Business           

Mahaska Co. Sheriff’s Office- Mahaska County Sheriff Russ VanRenterghem attended the City Council Meeting. The Sheriff’s Office has started a new program and the Sheriff or deputies will try to attend all City Council meetings. Also, starting April 1st the Sheriff’s Office will start 24 hour coverage of rural communities. Russ also dropped off a copy of FY18 28E Agreement. They will be requesting funds for the purchase of body cameras and microphones.

Hall Rentals- There were two hall rentals in the month of February.

Clean-up & Animal Control- A letter will be sent to landlord Donald McCarty for a property that he owns in Beacon due to the yard condition. There was no report from the Animal Shelter for the month of February.

Front St. Property- Jeff Smith reported that everything has been submitted to the Sheriff’s office. Ron Kauffman will check with the Sheriff’s office to see when the property is scheduled for Sheriff’s sale.

MidAmerican Energy Franchise Renewal- MidAmerican has asked the council to verify the property addresses in Beacon. Mayor Jim Hughes and Clerk Jaimie Williamson will meet to verify property addresses.

City Snow Removal- No update.

Guard Rail Repair- The guard rail has been repaired and a claim has also been submitted to the driver’s insurance company. Council has not received a bill from Gullet Fence Co. yet but once they do it will be submitted to the insurance company for reimbursement.

MCCF Grant- The Council will not be pursuing the grant.

Shed door bid- The Council accepted the new shed door bid at the 2-28-17 meeting and the work is scheduled to be completed.

City of Beacon Entrance Sign- Dwight Teeter brought a bid for a new entrance sign however it was for $350, which was higher than Mayor Jim Hughes’ entrance sign bid by $50. Dwight will get a bid for a concrete sign.
